X-Rays: When to Get One, Why, & Benefits

Discover when and why to get an X-ray—even beyond broken bones. Learn how X-rays can help detect hidden health issues, the benefits of early imaging, and where to get fast, same-day X-rays in Florida.

There are many reasons why you might want to get an X-ray–some of which are more obvious than others. X-rays are commonly used to identify bone fractures and other severe bone injuries. However, broken bones aren’t the only reason to get an X-ray. If you’re a health-conscious person with a proactive approach to health and wellness, X-rays can play a vital role in detecting medical conditions before you may be aware of them.

Some of these conditions include:

  • Bone spurs
  • Bone infections
  • Bone and lung cancer
  • Joint dislocations
  • Arthritis
  • Slipped vertebrae and Spinal Curvature Disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Foreign objects
  • Enlarged heart
  • Blocked blood vessels or blood clots
  • Kidney and bladder stones
  • Tumors
  • Lung infections like pneumonia, tuberculosis, and emphysema

There are many times when it might be appropriate to get an X-ray done. As we previously mentioned, it’s usually a good idea to get an X-ray when you suspect a bone fracture or joint dislocation. If your X-ray results do show a bone fracture or joint dislocation, there are typically clear next steps and a simple recovery process, which you can discuss with your doctor.

A less common experience, for example, that may prompt you to get an X-ray is if you suspect blood clots or blocked blood vessels. If you’re dealing with pain, swelling, redness, or warmth, especially in a centralized area of your body, it could indicate the presence of a blood clot. If signs of blocked blood vessels show up in your X-ray results, your doctor may suggest you follow up with a venogram or an ultrasound.

There are many other reasons and conditions, as listed above, that may constitute a need for an X-ray. Listen to your body, follow your instincts, and schedule an X-ray with a trusted doctor or facility when you think it makes sense.

People who experience chronic pain, inflammation, or trouble breathing tend to have a lot of complex, unanswered questions about their health. There isn’t a panacea or a one-size-fits-all cure to these circumstances, but there are ways to gain more clarity. One way to do this is to get a preliminary X-ray to look for telltale signs of certain medical conditions.

Especially if you’re someone who hasn’t been to the doctor in a long time (friendly reminder to book your annual exam), it might feel extra difficult to have the right language to communicate with medical professionals about your experience. This is where an X-ray may come in handy. It can offer you insight into your health and prompt you to dig deeper into those unanswered questions with the help of a professional.

Additionally, if there are any genetic or medical predispositions in your family, getting an X-ray can provide more context about whether or not those conditions are presenting in your body.

All in all, X-rays are a great way to reconnect with your health and learn more information about your current medical circumstances.

Aside from what we’ve already shared, there are some other benefits to getting an X-ray. Check it out:

  • Cost: X-rays are typically more affordable than MRIs, CT scans, or ultrasounds
  • Comfort: X-rays are non-invasive and more comfortable than other imaging options
  • Diagnosis or monitoring: X-rays can help identify and track the progression of specific medical conditions pertaining to bone, joint, and lung health
  • Quickness: X-rays are quicker than other imaging options, sometimes lasting only 10 minutes

If you’re thinking, “Wait, aren’t X-ray appointments typically hard to get without a present medical emergency? And aren’t they usually booked out months in advance?”, you’d be (mostly) correct.
