What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an imaging technique to reveal conditions inside your breasts. Screening mammograms find cancer at the earliest possible stage, long before you have symptoms and while the cancer is curable.

Your physician may also order a mammogram to diagnose other breast diseases, such as cysts, benign tumors (fibroadenomas), and precancerous growths (intraductal papillomas).

When do I need a screening mammogram for breast cancer?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends getting yearly mammograms beginning around age 40 to 45 — if you have an average risk for breast cancer.

You should start screening at 30 years if you have a high risk for breast cancer. Risk factors include:

  1. A family history of breast cancer
  2. Having a BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation verified by testing
  3. A parent, brother, sister, or child with the genetic mutation (without your genetic testing)
  1. Having chest radiation therapy before the age of 30
  2. Having an inherited condition (Li-Fraumeni, Cowden, or Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndromes)
Your gynecologist or primary care provider can perform a thorough risk assessment to determine your chances of developing breast cancer.

What type of mammogram will I receive?

The University Diagnostic Institute experts use today’s most advanced device, the Hologic Genius 3D Mammography Exam, to create 3-dimensional (3D) images, enabling a more precise diagnosis at an earlier stage than traditional mammograms.

Traditional mammograms use low-dose X-rays to create a flat, 2-dimensional (2D) image of the tissues inside your breast. These 2D images often overlap multiple layers of tissues, making it possible to miss a tumor.

The Genius device also uses low-dose X-rays and can produce a standard 2D picture. However, it creates a series of images that a computer reconstructs into highly detailed 3D images.

All women can benefit from the precision of the Genius 3D mammogram. However, it’s crucial for those with a history of breast cancer, symptoms of cancer, or who have dense breasts or breast implants.

What should I expect during a mammogram?

Mammograms are uncomfortable because it’s essential to hold and compress your breasts while taking the X-ray. The Genius system eases your discomfort with its SmartCurve® system. The device also takes the fastest scan possible, so you spend less time with your breasts in the device.
